Blended Learning
Today's
world asks for better and innovative ways of teaching in order to fulfill
everyone’s needs and accommodate to such hectic schedules. As, it has been
discussed before ESP (English for Specific Purposes) has become one of those
new paths in order to answer to a globalized world. Since ESP has allowed
people to concentrate on a specific field is it only natural to establish or
even come up with newer strategies to tackle previous problems that where faced
by learners and teachers, or maybe just improve what already exists. This is
the reason why ESP takes research as one of the most important issues to
consider because through investigation and hard work learning becomes a more
individual and personalized process.
One
of those solutions discovered is BLENDED LEARNING, which helps stakeholders
have a broader idea of combined strategies and methods to construct learning or
improve the existing learning process. This new term, for me, sets the bar
really high for the future teachers because it gives the chance to combine regular
face-to-face learning with other options out there like technology-based activities
that will help create a better environment for everyone involved. The innovative
part of this, is that it no longer takes technology as a time filler activity,
but as a way of build the learning together. Moreover, it is mandatory to go
through a learning process of what technology is and how to use it appropriately
to really take advantage of it.
Through
blended learning, negotiation among teachers and learners becomes stronger for
it gives them a new possibility to discuss and decide together on what to do
and how to do it. It is important to mention that this negotiation may create
also rapport and a sense of authentic interaction because students could feel their
opinions are relevant in the process and not only the teacher’s, as it has been
for so long. In addition, the feeling of mindfulness could also lift up their
motivation and lower the affective filter which can lead to a more meaningful
and autonomous learning.
As
a conclusion, I believe that being willing to change or have different options,
and research can take the teacher-based class into a much more interesting and
enjoyable one where true interaction happens stress-free. So, how do you feel
about blended learning? Would you do it?
Here
are some ideas to start your research…

ReplyDeleteThe two main aspects to mention here are research and blended learning. The two of them are interconnected as for one to exist, the other one has to be taken into account, and seriously. Without research, blended learning or any type of learning cannot be developed. From course planning to material delection, research plays an important role. Therefore, more than teacher preparation, individuals interested in ESP need prepararion on research and teaching - learning development strategies and training. Regarding blended education, it is a need right now. Not only is face to face relevant for learning, but also tecnology based classses. This will help different types of populations. Blended learning comes to solve the problem of contact as with the use of technology, students are not requiered to move o drive for many hours. In this way, the commuting time can be used to work on projects, to do homework or simply to read and study. Research, specially on needs, and blended education are two important aspects that need to be taken into considerarion for the sake of students' learning and development.
ReplyDeleteReading your detailed description of and proposal for blended learning turns out very inspirational and encouraging. For sure blended learning can take place at different levels since the guiding concept behind suits at any teaching context with some adjustments. Perhaps some of our students do not have a laptop at home, but it is very likely they own a smart phone or may stop by a Café Internet. Negotiation and innovation are key concepts, though the level of elaboration or implementation varies from city to city, from nation to nation. Another key concept you wisely share with your readers is the notion of technology serving a clear purpose that is aligned with educational goals and objectives.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I believe every classroom can become a newer more innovative version of itself. Some students may not have access to technology at home, but there are many different ways on which we, as teachers, can facilitate the space for that. It is only a matter willingness and flexibility.
DeleteWho are you? Make sure you write your name
DeleteGlo, thank you for sharing those great blended learning ideas. I would say an important aspect to be considered is that it requires some training for designing adequate online activities.
ReplyDeleteYes, completely agree! That is why I said I believe it is mandatory first to learn how to use technology appropriately and to make sure that it serves the objectives of the class.
DeleteAs we mentioned in the class discussion, technology shouldn't only be a game o time-filler, there should a reason and clear objectives to get the best from it.
There is still a long way to go, but there has to be a start...
